Podcast: Ep. 52 - This is the End

Ep. 52: This is the End

Well folks, it's been real.  Here at Lost Tribe we don't pride ourselves on much, but we are proud of the fact that we have been able to give you a quality podcast each and every week.  Come hell or high water we've always delivered a podcast that we've been proud of, and we aren't about to start half-assing things now.  As a result, this will be our last podcast for the time being.  Life just gets too busy sometimes and with a slew of weddings, second/third/fourth jobs, vacations, etc. there is no way that we can keep delivering a podcast every single week.  For the time being we will be going on 'hiatus'.  What that means, I'm not exactly sure, but it does allow us to return at a future date if we are so inclined, and maybe get in on some that reunion tour money (Judge and American Nightmare doesn't deserve it all).  And for anyone wondering, yes, we will still keep the website going, and will probably be a lot more active posting reviews there as we no longer have the podcast to discuss the music/movies/comics/video games/politics/etc. that we do or do not like.  So enjoy this final episode, where the boys talk about not-so-sexy gangster rap, World War Z, and a whole bunch of other cool shit.  It's been a lot of fun, so thanks for listening.

If you are looking to download older episodes, get them while they are hot...we will be removing them from the interweb by Sept. 1st.  You can currently download all 52 episodes and just listen to them whenever you want, but as of the end of the summer they will no longer be available.

Podcast: Ep. 50 - Call of Duty Dogs

Ep. 50: Call of Duty Dogs

In this episode the boys discuss international Slayer purchases, the official release of Xbox One, and the battle lines that have now been drawn between Microsoft and Sony's PS4.  The reason we can have this debate is because E3 has happened and all sorts of glorious new techy things have been announced that the boys talk about, rate, and drool over. As a bonus, more invested members of Lost Tribe explain everything about the evolution of video games to those less in-the-know.  Finally, Marvel movies get some talk time as everyone ponders why Guardians of the Galaxy is becoming a blockbuster.

Podcast: Ep. 49 - Air Wolf vs. The King of Kong (Light Em Up)

Ep. 49: Air Wolf vs. The King of Kong (Light Em Up)

In this episode the boys deliver the best podcast of this, or any, decade.  We discuss new bands like Heartless and Greber that are great, and older music that is incredibly shitty like Fall Out Boy.  Then there is a discussion about World/Inferno Friendship Society and bizarre old ass shows like Air Wolf....and no, I don't really remember it either.  We talk about the new Start Trek movie and argue over how good it is, but we all agree that the technology they has is something we most definitely want!  We talk about other shit, but I'm writing this at my parent's place with the worst netbook ever, so I'm not writing anymore.  Enjoy.

Podcast: Ep. 48: The Future is Now, Motherfuckers!

Ep. 48: The Future is Now, Motherfuckers!

In this episode the boys discuss awesome local hardcore shows (RIP Purity Control and hurray for Pick Your Side) and revist the Rob Ford crack smoking scandal.  The majority of the episode is dedicated to the return of Arrested Development and how season 4 stacks up against previous episodes (hint: we like it, but lets not go overboard, it wasn't THAT great).  Following that, the boys discuss how the future is here, and it's going to watch you in your living room! Xbox One, PS4, etc. are all on their way and while their technology is impressive, it may also turn out to be invasive and downright creepy.

Podcast: Ep. 46 - I'ma Give You Five Bucks Right Now

Ep. 46: I'ma Give You Five Bucks Right Now

In this episode the boys explain the absolute clusterfuck that is the politics of the city of Toronto.  Specifically, we discuss how the 4th largest city in North America has an 'alleged' crackhead for a mayor.  Thank you Rob Ford for being an unending stream of embarassment for all of us.  On the second half of the show is dedicated to the trainwreck that was the season finale of Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares.  Bon Appetite!

Podcast: Ep. 44 - The Slutty Ari Gold

Ep. 44: The Slutty Ari Gold

On this horribly recorded podcast (don't worry, we've figured out our sound issues and every podcast after this one will sound like sonic gold...so don't get your panties in a bunch.) the boys talk about incredibly ridiculous and awesome sorority letter that has taken over the internet as of late.  We love her.  We hate her.  We love to hate her.  Once we get over our internet obsession, they discuss the repress of Cursed's legedary 'One' album, and other newer Toronto bands that are worth checking out.  Furthermore, the initial This Is Hardcore 2013 line-up was announced, so they talk about how great Kid Dynamite is.  Moving away from music, the guys talk about Newsroom, Game of Thrones, Once Upon a Time, and how even non-gamers should definitely play the Bioshock games.  Fuck Ayn Rand.

Podcast: Ep. 43 - You are not smarter than the FBI

Ep. 43: You are not smarter than the FBI

In this episode the boys discuss the tragedy of the Boston Marathon and all of the heroicness and idiocy surronding it.  They were unsurprisingly impressed with how the city of Boston dealt with such horrific events and continue to believe that it is one of the, if not the best city on this stupid planet.  Sadly, Alex Jones, Twitter, CNN, and conspiracy theory fuckwits had to make a bad situation worse by being some of the most irresponsible, selfish assholes imaginable.  Boston Strong.

Podcast: Ep. 42 - But It's Kinda Glam, Right?

Ep. 42: But It's Kinda Glam, Right?

In this episode the boys discuss some punk rock awesomeness (Against Me!, The Bronx, Bad Religion), the return of veterans (Hatebreed, Rex from Pantera), and how Rise Against isn't very good anymore. Everyone then discusses the most famous person they have met (spoiler: the winner is Hasselhoff!....and Bigfoot...the monster truck...).  Strangely enough, the topic of sports comes up and everyone does their best to act like they know what they are talking about.  The discussion then jumps around to everything from Tom Green, Olympus is Fallen, and that the girl from Dredd/Game of Thrones is broke.

Review: Lucero - Texas & Tennessee

Lucero

Texas & Tennessee

Lucero’s sound has been a lot of things: twangy country, bar rock, melancholy alt-country, and a whole bunch of things in between.  For me, they’ve always been the most piercing purveyors of sad bastard music on the sketchy side of the Mason-Dixon.  I’ve loved this band through all of their incarnations and stylistic changes, but I truly do prefer them when they are moaning about a forelorned lover or regretting whiskey-fueled life choices.  On their most recent work, Women & Work, they largely substituted the depressing mode of earlier work in favour of more up-beat Memphis soul sound, which I liked a little less (personal preference).  Fortunately, they have seemed to lose whatever sense of happiness that they had on their newest EP called Texas & Tennessee.  While the musical style isn’t that far from their newer material, there is an authenticity in these depressing-as-hell songs that I love and that harkens back to the bands earlier work.

The song “Texas & Tennessee” is a highlight of the 4-song EP and is slow, murky, and heart-felt in an impressive way that Lucero has become famous for.  From there “Union Pacific Line” takes a decidedly country turn and would almost be at home on another Ben Nichols solo album.  Regardless, this song is sad and amazing.  “Breathless Love” seems like the most at home with the Women & Work-era Lucero that we’ve seen as of late, but there is still sadness that transcends the use of a horn section.  Finally, “The Other Side of Lonesome” makes even the most chipper listener contemplate suicide.....and I mean that as a compliment.  Most vocalists sound like whiney bitches or self-indulgent brats when they fill consecutive songs with laments, but Nichols has the ability to turn a phrase in such a way as to melt an old metalheads heart rather than encourage his scorn.

Yes, this is a metal/hardcore/punk review site, but Lucero is better than most bands, and I help run this site, so I’ll do whatever I damn well please.

Podcast: Ep. 41 - Drinking Like Don Draper

Lost Tribe Podcast
Ep. 41: Drinking Like Don Draper

In this episode the boys talk about American Nightmare's impending Canadian show and how weird it was that the internet didn't catch on fire when tickets went on sale.  After discussing how good the new Paint It Black is and the return of Game of Thrones.  Next, there is much discussion about how shitty fat suits are, but how great old fashions taste when Mad Men becomes the topic of conversation.  To end things off on a high note every one complains about the end of Weeds, the movie This is 40, and just how fucking depressing living in Canada during the wintertime can be.

Podcast: Ep. 40 - The Marshall Mathers Episode

Lost Tribe Podcast

Ep. 40: The Marshall Mathers Episode

In this episode the boys talk about awesome hardcore (Incendiary, Rotting Out and Shai Hulud) and our decline in the interest in rap battles (for a cornucopia of reasons).  The conversation then drifts towards some rappers inability to write full records and just how incredible Eminem was and probably could still be if he would just stop putting out utter nonsense.  Also, the boys apologize for the utter shit music that Canada is known for putting out (we have good music I swear!  We had(ve) No Warning!  Cursed!  Fucked Up! Stompin’ Tom!) .  Then everything gets insanely sad when the documentary The Invisible War is discussed.

Ep. 39: I Thought Reagan Was God

In this episode the boys talk about the Reagan era!  That means there is discussion about the music of the era and what happens when you get raised secular and end up thinking that Ronald Reagan is in fact God....ya.  From there everyone discusses what podcasts/radio shows they have been listening to and which to absolutely avoid (we are looking at you Savage Nation). Finally, discussions devolve into insults based on what it would be like to travel to Mars together.

Ep. 38: Don't Be a Sperm Jacker

On this weeks episode the boys talk about GI Joe, growing up in the country, and all of the fucked up things that come with growing up in the sticks.  We discuss the types of things we'd do for cash when we were little, and a few disturbing things that have happened to us with social workers...and it's not what you think.

Ep. 36: PS4 News #Dogs of Instagram

In this episode the boys reminisce about living in London, ON and all the ridiculous of growing up in medium-sized city that thinks it's a small town.  After the nostalgia wears off discussion turns to product launchs, specifically the Playstation 4 and the Blackberry Z10....and how awkward these 'media events' can be to watch.  Finally, the boys reveal themselves to be old as fuck by failing to understand, and then bitching about, instagram.

Podcast: Ep. 35 - The Pope Gave Up and Red Dawn was Good

Lost Tribe Podcast

Ep. 35: The Pope Gave up and Red Dawn was Good

In this episode we finally get the ol' gang back together and discuss what was missed during the past few weeks.  There is talk about the meteor, comics, and other topics that were discussed in the last few episodes.  Once new topics are brought up there is lots of questions about how the hell you quit being the pope and how it will not affect our lives in any way.  At all.  Following this, there is much debate over the show Girls and what year the Sidekick phone came out.  The show 24 is held up as an impressive series and the remake of Red Dawn is given waaaaaaaay too much thought (but it's good, we swear!).

Review: Ruined Families - Blank Language

Ruined Families
Blank Language

Sometimes the world is a terrible, dark, shitty place.  Wars, famine, McDonalds putting tomato on my burger no matter how many fucking times I tell them that I don’t want those disgusting things anywhere near my food, and other such tragedies are all too commonplace.  As a result, it only makes sense that certain art is created to reflect the lowest, dirtiest, and rawest parts of this tomato-filled experience we call life.  Ruined Families is a band that specializes in this type of art.

I first heard about Ruined Families when the band contacted Lost Tribe to review their self-titled 7”, and quickly fell in love (read the review here if you don’t believe me.).  With a healthy mix of sludge, crust, hardcore, punk, and black metal, these Greeks (phrasing it like that sounds bigoted to me for some reason, but I can’t put my finger on why, so it’s gonna stay that way) show everyone how it should be done.  They have the intensity and hunger of a young band, but none of the usual trappings.  Their songs sound well-crafted, interesting, diverse, and forceful, and the lyrical subject matter is as bleak and dark as you might expect.

Songs like “Easy Livin’” and “Human Fence” sound killer but leave me pissed off that I may never get to see them performed live, as they have that there-is-broken-glass-and-blood-on-the-dance-floor feel that I’ve always appreciated in a live performance.  In fact, there isn’t a single track on this album that relents in any real way.  It’s a non-stop wave of depressing, punishing blackened hardcore.  In other words, what’s not to like!
I think someone (not me) should give Ruined Families airfare to come tour North America.  I think they would do nicely opening for the likes of Wiccans.  Just a thought.

Either way, a solid fucking album from start to finish.

Buy it from here (I don’t know if they have N.A. distro yet)

Podcast: Ep 34 - Why Not Just Watch One Thing?

Lost Tribe Podcast

Ep. 34: Why Not Just Watch One Thing?

In this episode the boys discuss the (non-Lost Tribe) podcasts that they love, and a few that they loathe. The verdict comes down on a bunch of TV shows, with a solid list of must-watches, and a couple don't-bothers.  Most importantly, it gets determined that certain podcasters have TV-ADHD and it's getting out of hand, and he needs to just fucking focus on a few things.  Finally, DC takes another shelling while Marvel gets all sorts of praise.

Ep. 33 - A Sad Day to Die Hard

In this episode half of the crew sit down to discuss aging Canadian hardcore and the travesty that is the new Die Hard movie.  We mean it.  It's fucking terrible.  After that we talk about drugs (Lance Armstrong), murder (Oscar Pistorious), and mass murder (Christopher Dorner) in the news as well as how the sky is falling in Russia.

Ep.32 Requiem For a Maniac Cop

In this episode the boys all but abandon Mike because of one hell of a winter storm, but he rescues the show by inviting a couple guests who join the ranks.  Ditching music for the week, things start off with an interesting chat about comics that people may not have heard of.  Then there is much discussion about vigilante cops and the action movie-esque street justice they exact (but somehow there is no mention of Body Count), which transfers into discussion about mental health and how every one thinks they are nuts at one point or another.  Finally, there is more disgust about appropriated grief, which is seems even our guests have a special hate for.  Enjoy this special guest-filled episode before the original line-up returns to ruin things next week.

Lost Tribe Podcast

Ep. 31 - Torture Motherfucker, What?

In this episode the boys talk about Tim Armstrong's new project (hint: it's not heroin this time) and then dive into a long, but not uncalled for, discussion about Zero Dark Thirty.  Gritty Journalism, Torture Porn, or just a pretty good movie?  The discussion rages on for quite a while.  Finally the boys talk about the re-emergence of Star Wars under the guidance of Disney.  Spoiler, the general consensus is that George Lucas is kind of a shitty, possibly rascist, sci-fi writer.
